Long a
backpacker favorite Joy Bungalow is the best-known resort on the island
and I think it could be argued that they are the best-known
bungalow operation in all of Southern Thailand, if not the
entire country. Everybody has heard of Joy. This was a wild
place when it was the first resort built on KJum way back in
1990 and was the only game in town until New Bungalow moved in
next door in 1993. Built under towering casuarina palm trees
the whole area has a very pastoral setting.
If you just want to relax and work on your tan,
beauteous Andaman
Beach is right there.

They have a total of 44 bungalows (9 were destroyed
by the Tsunami, now rebuilt) of
different shapes and sizes and expense. Most have a porch and
a private bathroom with cold-water shower and toilet. All are
equipped with mosquito nets. Only a few of the huts have
electricity. The bungalows have been upgraded the past few
years, but you can still find a few toiletless/showerless
cheapies on the edge of the jungle in the back.
The restaurant has been dishing out good
food for a long time and offers Thai delicacies and some
Western food. This is a rustic, shady place with a nice view of the beach.

Joy
Tours offer the usual boat trips to the neighboring islands.
Laundry services and international phone calls are
available, assuming you're one of only ten people in the whole
of Thailand who doesn't have a cell phone with a calling card.
The
tsunami wiped out the entire front row of bungalows that were
built on the dunes by the beach. The restaurant was damaged
slightly, but since repaired. The famous bright orange "Joy
Bungalows" sign on the beach dunes was washed away. Kn. Bao
has since replaced that symbol of JB with a new one. The
legend continues. |
